Bhubaneswar: The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) has announced a major opportunity for the country’s young athletes — the top performers from the National Junior Championships 2025 will be considered for selection to the South Asian Senior Athletics Championships.
The move marks a bold step by AFI to bridge the gap between junior and senior levels, ensuring that the best emerging talents get early exposure to international competition. By allowing standout juniors to compete in a senior event, AFI hopes to build a stronger, deeper talent pool for the future.
AFI officials confirmed that only athletes who meet the performance standards and show the potential to compete at the senior level will be shortlisted. This isn’t an automatic promotion — consistency, discipline, and ability to handle higher-level pressure will all factor into the final selection.
The decision also adds extra motivation for young competitors at the National Junior meet. Knowing that strong performances could lead directly to representing India at a senior championship raises the stakes and inspires higher standards at the junior level.
For many of these young athletes, this could be their first taste of international competition — and for Indian athletics, it’s a sign of confidence in the next generation. By fast-tracking top juniors into senior events, AFI is paving the way for a smoother transition between age categories and strengthening India’s bench for the years ahead.
