Deja Vu: Has Cricket Ever Seen Back-to-Back Tied Matches In T20I’s?

Deja Vu: Has Cricket Ever Seen Back-to-Back Tied Matches In T20I’s?

Dubai – In the unpredictable world of Twenty20 International cricket, a tied score is a rare and dramatic event. Yet, for India and Sri Lanka, it’s quickly becoming a bizarre signature of their intense rivalry.

Following the thrilling Asia Cup 2025 Super Four match that ended in a tie and was decided by a Super Over, an incredible piece of statistical history has emerged: the previous T20I fixture between the two teams also ended in a tie, forcing two consecutive deadlocks in as many matches!

The Unbelievable Back-to-Back Ties

The two matches in question form one of the rarest streaks in the history of international cricket:

  1. Match 1: July 30, 2024 (Pallekele, Sri Lanka)
    • Result: India 137/9 tied with Sri Lanka 137/8.
    • Tiebreaker: India won the Super Over.
  2. Match 2: September 26, 2025 (Asia Cup Super Four, Dubai, UAE)
    • Result: India 202/5 tied with Sri Lanka 202/5.
    • Tiebreaker: India won the Super Over.

Twice in a row, after forty high-pressure overs of cricket, two teams could not be separated, forcing the drama of a Super Over. The fact that this has occurred in consecutive T20I matches between two teams is a feat of consistent statistical equilibrium that is almost unmatched globally.

The Rarest of Rivalries: A Global Anomaly

While tied matches themselves are scarce—occurring in only a tiny percentage of all T20Is played—back-to-back ties between the same two nations are a phenomenal outlier.

Historically, this phenomenon has only been recorded once before in men’s T20I history:

  • India vs. New Zealand (2020): India’s tour of New Zealand saw two consecutive T20I matches end in a tie, both of which India won in the Super Over (January 29 and January 31, 2020).

The current deadlock between India and Sri Lanka means these two rivals have now etched their names alongside India and New Zealand as the only pairings in men’s T20I history to produce two tied matches in a row.

This streak highlights not only the incredibly tight nature of the competition when these two neighbours clash, but also a new, uncanny element of parity that is setting this particular rivalry apart from any other in the world right now. Fans can only wonder if the next time these teams meet, the Super Over will be called upon for an unbelievable third straight time.
