India Submits Bid to Host 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad

PC- IANS Live

India has officially presented its proposal to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, positioning Ahmedabad as the host city for the centenary edition of the event. The delegation, led by Gujarat Sports Minister Harsh Sanghavi and Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president Dr. P. T. Usha, submitted the bid in London before the Commonwealth Sport Evaluation Committee.

Ahmedabad as the Proposed Host

The bid highlights Ahmedabad’s readiness with international-standard venues, modern transport facilities, and quality accommodation. Officials stressed that the city has a proven track record of staging major events, including the ICC Men’s World Cup, Indian Premier League, and the 2022 National Games. It is also set to host the Asian Aquatics Championships in 2025 and the Asian Weightlifting Championships in 2026.

Strong Backing from Authorities

The proposal enjoys full support from the Government of India, the Government of Gujarat, and the Commonwealth Games Association of India. The Union Cabinet approved the bid on August 27, and IOA cleared it earlier this month. The delegation also included senior government and sports officials, underlining a united effort.

Significance of the Centenary Edition

The 2030 Games carry historic importance as they mark 100 years of the Commonwealth Sport Movement. India has pitched the event as a celebration of values like inclusivity, sustainability, and gender equity. “Hosting the centenary Games in Ahmedabad will be a proud milestone, not just for Gujarat but for India,” Sanghavi said, adding that it would inspire youth and contribute to the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.

Dr. Usha echoed the sentiment, stressing that India’s bid goes beyond infrastructure. “It is about values, legacy, and shaping the future of the Commonwealth Movement,” she said.

Competing Bids

India’s main competitor is Nigeria, which has proposed Abuja as its host city. Canada, which initially showed interest, withdrew earlier due to budgetary constraints. The final decision on the host city is expected later this year.
