Olympic bronze medallist Aman Sehrawat was disqualified from the World Wrestling Championship in Zagreb on Sunday after failing to make the weight limit in the men’s freestyle 57kg category.
Overweight by 1.7 kg
Aman, who brought India glory with a bronze medal at the Paris Olympics last year, was found overweight by 1.7 kilograms during the official weigh-in. His disqualification came as a major setback for the Indian contingent.
“Unfortunate and surprising”
“It’s unfortunate and surprising that Aman could not maintain his weight. He was overweight by 1700 grams when he stood on the scale. This is not acceptable, actually. How did he get so much extra weight is beyond us,” a source in the Indian camp told PTI from Zagreb.
Major setback for India
With Aman ruled out, India lost a strong medal contender in one of its key categories. Wrestling remains one of India’s most successful Olympic sports, and expectations were high from the 21-year-old grappler.
