Weber eyes Tokyo glory, respects Neeraj’s excellence

Bhubaneswar:German javelin ace Julian Weber is gearing up to challenge reigning world champion Neeraj Chopra at the upcoming World Athletics Championships in Tokyo. Speaking from his training base in Japan, Weber expressed mutual respect and camaraderie with Neeraj, saying, “Neeraj and I deserve a medal, but if he is better than me I will respect that.” Weber highlighted their friendly rivalry and motivation during competitions, recalling how they both joined the elite 90-meter club this season, pushing each other forward.

Weber recently threw his career-best 91.51 meters at the Diamond League Final in Zurich, marking the longest throw of the year, and positioning himself as a serious contender for the Tokyo title. Reflecting on his progress, he cited improved technique, injury-free training, and a calmer mindset as key factors behind his success. Weber also mentioned how javelin throwing has become a truly global sport, with champions emerging from diverse countries like India, Kenya, and Trinidad and Tobago.

With strong competitors including Chopra, Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem, and other international stars, the men’s javelin final promises intense competition. Weber, who comes from a handball family with a naturally strong arm, hopes to finally land a major gold medal after years of close finishes. He acknowledged the different social pressures faced by himself and Neeraj but emphasized their shared dream of medaling on the world’s biggest stage. The championship is scheduled from September 13 to 21 in Tokyo, with the javelin final on September 18.

This battle between Weber and Chopra symbolizes the new era of javelin throwing, marked by fierce but respectful rivalries and the global rise of the sport.
