PV Sindhu’s Hong Kong Open campaign ended early as the two-time Olympic medallist lost to Denmark’s Line Christophersen in the women’s singles round of 32 on Wednesday. Sindhu went down 21-15, 16-21, 19-21 in just under an hour.
First defeat to Dane
The result marked Sindhu’s first defeat against the 25-year-old Dane in six meetings. The Indian began strongly, taking the opener with a late run of points, but unforced errors allowed Christophersen to seize control in the second game.
Decider slips away
In the final game, both players were locked at 19-all before Christophersen held her nerve to clinch the match. The loss comes just weeks after Sindhu reached the World Championships quarterfinals, hinting at signs of recovery following a difficult season.
Other Indian results
In doubles action, Rutaparna and Swetaparna Panda lost to Hong Kong’s Oi Ki Vanessa Pang and Sum Yau Wong in straight games, while Dhruv Kapil and Tanisha Crasto exited against a Chinese Taipei pair. Men’s doubles duo Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty advanced earlier to the round of 16.
