Hope Soars High: Young Indian Archers Clinch Historic Medals in World Archery Championships

Bhubaneswar : The 2023 World Archery Championships witnessed a historic breakthrough for India, as the nation bagged four medals—the best haul ever at this global event, including two shining golds in the compound category. This performance has sparked tremendous hope for India’s rise in international archery.

Seventeen-year-old prodigy Aditi Gopichand Swami etched her name in history by becoming the youngest-ever individual world champion in the women’s compound event. In a nail-biting final, she bested Mexico’s Andrea Becerra 149-147. The young sensation had earlier defeated teammate Jyothi Surekha Vennam, seeded second, 149-145 in the semi-finals. Jyothi later pulled off a splendid comeback by clinching the bronze medal with a 150-146 win over Turkey’s Ipek Tomruk.

The women’s compound team, featuring veterans Parneet Kaur, Aditi Swami, and Jyothi Vennam, also brought glory by securing the gold medal—the first-ever team gold for India at the World Archery Championships.

On the men’s side, 21-year-old Ojas Pravin Deotale delivered a masterful performance, narrowly defeating Poland’s Łukasz Przybylski 150-149 in the men’s individual compound final. Along the way, Ojas had toppling former world champion Mike Schloesser of the Netherlands and another Polish contender, demonstrating his mettle under pressure.

India’s compound teams have also been dominating recent international circuits, like the 2025 Hyundai Archery World Cup, where Jyothi Surekha Vennam and Rishabh Yadav clinched the mixed team gold with a close 153-151 win, boosting India’s chances as compound archery gears up for its Olympic debut at Los Angeles 2028.

The scores and sharp shooting from these young archers signal a bright future, proving that India is not just participating but contending fiercely for top honors on the world stage. From teenage Aditi’s historic win to Ojas’s barely edged victory, India’s compound archery is aflame with hope and medals.

As the archery world watches, Team India continues to rise with poise, skill, and a hunger for more historic moments at the World Championships and beyond. The journey has begun—and the promise is exciting.

Medal Highlights:

Aditi Gopichand Swami: Gold, Women’s Individual Compound (149-147 final score)

Ojas Pravin Deotale: Gold, Men’s Individual Compound (150-149 final score)

Jyothi Surekha Vennam: Bronze, Women’s Individual Compound (150-146 final score)

Parneet Kaur, Aditi Swami, Jyothi Vennam: Gold, Women’s Compound Team

This stellar performance from India at the 2023 World Archery Championships in Berlin has set the tone for a hopeful and promising future in compound archery on the global stage.
