Bihar : In a nail-biting Pool A encounter at the Hockey Asia Cup 2025, India overcame a late surge from Japan to emerge victorious with a 3-2 scoreline, thrilling a packed Rajgir stadium and millions watching across the country.
India, led by the ever-reliable captain Harmanpreet Singh, burst out of the blocks with two quick goals in the first five minutes. Mandeep Singh struck in the fourth minute, expertly slotting home after a fine setup by Sukhjeet Singh. Harmanpreet doubled India’s advantage just a minute later, capitalizing on a penalty corner with a fierce shot that left the Japanese keeper no chance.
Japan refused to buckle under pressure, with Kosei Kawabe clawing one back in the 38th minute and adding a tense second goal in the 59th, threatening to overturn the result in the dying moments. But Harmanpreet Singh rose to the occasion again, scoring his second of the night in the 46th minute to restore India’s lead and guide his side to a second consecutive win in the tournament.
India’s defensive resilience, particularly in the final minutes—when the team faced playing with ten men due to a yellow card for Harmanpreet—sealed the victory and nearly guaranteed a place in the Super 4s stage. This memorable match also marked a milestone for goalkeeper Krishan Pathak, who celebrated his 150th international appearance.
Harmanpreet Singh summed up the night with pride:
“Every win matters in the Asia Cup. We’ve shown fight and spirit, and that’s what this team is all about.”
With their sights now firmly set on their next clash and a possible direct entry into the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026, India’s campaign is surging with confidence and skill.
