Veteran Spinner R. Ashwin Announces Retirement from Indian Premier League

Bhubaneshwar – In a significant development for Indian cricket, veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL), effective immediately. The star cricketer, who was most recently with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), made the announcement on Wednesday, signaling the end of his illustrious 16-year association with the tournament.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Ashwin shared his decision, stating: “My time as an IPL cricketer comes to a close today, but my time as an explorer of the game around various leagues begins today. I would like to thank all the franchisees for all the wonderful memories and relationships over the years, and most importantly, the @IPL and the @BCCI for what they have given me until now.”

Throughout his tenure, Ashwin also represented franchises such as the now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiant, Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, and Rajasthan Royals.

A Storied Career by the Numbers

Ashwin retires as one of the most successful bowlers in IPL history, with a host of impressive records that place him among the format’s all-time greats.

  • Matches: 221
  • Wickets: 187
  • Economy Rate: 7.20
  • Average: 30.22
  • Best Bowling Figures: 4/34
  • Ranking: He retires as the fifth-highest wicket-taker in IPL history.

In his most recent season with CSK, Ashwin played nine matches, taking seven wickets at an economy rate of 9.13. This was the first time in his career that his economy rate had exceeded 8.49, marking his most expensive season.

A Legacy Forged in Yellow

Ashwin’s IPL journey began with the Chennai Super Kings in 2009, where he quickly became an integral part of the team. He was a local hero and a product of the CSK system, playing a pivotal role in their title-winning campaigns in 2010 and 2011, as well as their triumphs in the Champions League T20. His initial success at the franchise laid the foundation for his formidable reputation as a bowler who could consistently deliver breakthroughs and control the flow of runs in the powerplay and middle overs. His recent return to the team in his final season brought his career full circle, concluding his IPL journey where it all began.

What Lies Ahead: A New Chapter in Global Leagues

While his IPL career has concluded, Ashwin’s statement opens a new chapter for the veteran spinner. By making himself available for various leagues across the globe, he is set to become a globetrotting T20 specialist. This move allows him to continue his career in the shorter format without the demanding nine-week schedule of the IPL. He could potentially feature in tournaments like the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), the Big Bash League (BBL), or the SA20, where his vast experience, tactical acumen, and variations would be highly sought after. This new path not only extends his playing career but also offers him the opportunity to mentor and share his knowledge with emerging talent on a global stage.
