Australia hit 431/2 versus South Africa in the 3rd ODI in Mackay

South Africa posted an unwanted record in their ODI cricket history. Temba Bavuma’s men suffered a mammoth 276-run defeat against Australia in the 3rd and final ODI match in Mackay. As per ESPNcricinfo, this is now South Africa’s biggest defeat margin in ODI cricket (by runs).

After seeing the Aussies post their 2nd-highest score in ODI cricket, South Africa were abysmal with the bat and folded cheaply to concede this heavy defeat.

Australia managed a mammoth score of 431/2 in 50 overs. They saw openers Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh hammer tons and post a 250-run opening stand. Head scored 142 and Marsh hit 100. Cameron Green’s 2nd-fastest hundred for Australia (by balls) and Alex Carey’s unbeaten 50 guided Australia to 431/2. Green smashed 118* runs from just 55 balls. For South Africa, Keshav Maharaj (1/50) was the pick of the bowlers.

With the bat, South Africa perished for 155 runs in 24.3 overs. Dewald Brevis was their top scorer with 49 runs. Tony de Zorzi was the only other player to score 30-plus runs (33). Australia’s Cooper Connolly floored South Africa with 5/22 from 6 overs. He clocked the best figures by an Australian spinner against South Africa in ODIs.

Previously, South Africa’s biggest defeat margin (by runs) came versus India in 2023. They lost that contest by a margin of 223 runs at Eden Gardens. The 2023 ODI World Cup clash saw India manage 326/5. SA perished for 83 runs with Ravindra Jadeja bagging a fifer.

Here we present South Africa’s biggest defeat (by runs) in ODIs.
