Mohammad Hafeez Criticises ‘Key Player’ Tag For Babar Azam And Mohammad Rizwan After Asia Cup Omission

Bhubaneswar :

Hafeez Questions Star Duo’s Impact

Former Pakistan all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez has criticised the constant portrayal of Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan as “key players” after both senior cricketers were left out of Pakistan’s squad for the Asia Cup 2025 and the triangular T20I series in the UAE.

Hafeez argued that the label should be reserved only for those who deliver consistent match-winning performances, something he feels the pair have not done in recent times. “A key player is one who wins you games regularly, not someone who only scores runs,” Hafeez said.

Selectors Opt For Aggressive Approach

Pakistan’s selectors, under head coach Mike Hesson, unveiled a younger, more aggressive squad that focuses on power-hitting and intent at the top order. Explaining Babar Azam’s omission, Hesson said the former captain had been asked to work on specific areas before returning to the side.

The squad features attacking options such as Saim Ayub, Sahibzada Farhan and Fakhar Zaman, a move aimed at aligning Pakistan with the fast-paced demands of modern T20 cricket.

Emerging Players Get Backing

Hafeez backed the inclusion of new performers like Salman Ali Agha, Saim Ayub and Hasan Nawaz, stressing that the focus should now shift towards cricketers who can shape Pakistan’s future over the next decade.

He also extended his remarks to the bowling department, observing that even frontline pacers Shaheen Shah Afridi and Naseem Shah have not consistently produced game-changing spells in recent months.

A Bold Shift Ahead Of Asia Cup

The exclusion of two of Pakistan’s most experienced batters marks a major turning point for the team ahead of the Asia Cup. While the decision has sparked debate, Hafeez maintained that the time has come to prioritise performance and long-term planning over established reputations.

Pakistan’s revamped squad will now be tested in the high-pressure environment of the Asia Cup, where the new strategy of backing youth and aggression will face its first major challenge.
