Ramesh Budihal Makes History with India’s First Individual Medal at Asian Surfing Championships

Mahabalipuram, India – History was etched into the waves of Mahabalipuram on Sunday as Ramesh Budihal secured a groundbreaking bronze medal in the Open Men’s category at the Asian Surfing Championships. This marks India’s first-ever individual medal in the history of the competition, a monumental achievement for the sport in the nation.

A Gritty Performance to Secure Bronze

In a thrilling final, Budihal scored 12.60 points, finishing behind Indonesia’s Pajar Ariyana (14.57 points), who took silver, and South Korea’s Kanoa Heejae (15.17 points), who clinched the gold.

Budihal began the final strongly, catching the opening wave for a score of 6.17, initially placing him second. However, as the heat progressed, his opponents showcased their prowess, with the young South Korean taking an early lead and the Indonesian finding his rhythm, pushing Budihal to third.

Recognizing the need to protect his bronze medal position, Budihal delivered under pressure. In the dying moments of the heat, he executed his highest score of 6.43, solidifying his total of 12.60 and securing the historic podium finish.

Paving the Way for Indian Surfing

Budihal had already made history on Saturday by becoming the first Indian surfer to reach the final of the Asian Surfing Championships. His coach, Samai Reboul, expressed immense pride, noting the significance of not only Budihal reaching the final but also two other Indian surfers making it to the semifinals.

“The fact that we had not only Ramesh in the final, but also two reaching the semifinal was really big. It was really good for the sport,” said Reboul. He added that with initial goals already met, the pressure was off, allowing Budihal to “be free and show his surfing.”

This landmark triumph for Ramesh Budihal is expected to significantly boost India’s efforts to earn additional quotas for the Asian Games 2026 in Japan, further elevating the profile of surfing in the country.
