On August 9, Saturday, Manchester United announced the signing of Slovenian striker Benjamin Sesko from German club RB Leipzig in a deal worth £73.7 million. The 22-year-old put pen to paper on a five-year contract at Old Trafford.
Interestingly, the transfer fee includes an initial payment of £66.26 million with an additional £7.36 million in performance-related add-ons. Manchester United managed to beat Newcastle United for the player’s signature. The Magpies had made two bids, including a much significant 2nd bid than that of the Red Devils.
Sesko was presented alongside fellow new signings Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo ahead of their final pre-season clash against Fiorentina at Old Trafford. Sesko is expected to lead the line when Man United host Arsenal in their Premier League opener next weekend.
Sesko spent two seasons at RB Leipzig in which he came out with 39 goals from 87 appearances in all competitions. He chipped in with 8 assists.
His performance in the Bundesliga
In 64 Bundesliga matches across two seasons, Sesko scored 27 goals. In the 2023-24 campaign, he managed 14 goals from 31 games. Last season, Sesko chipped in with 13 goals from 33 matches. In these two seasons, he contributed with 7 assists.
A look at his numbers in Bundesliga 2024-25 campaign
Sesko played 33 games for Leipzig in the Bundesliga last season. In addition to 13 goals, Sesko made 5 assists.
According to Squawka Comparison Matrix, the player managed to register 50 shots (excluding blocks), with 31 being on target. The youngster created a total of 17 chances. He owned a passing accuracy of 68.22%, having completed 401 out of 610 passes.
He completed 39 take-ons in addition to making 7 tackles. He also won 136 duels besides making 20 clearances and 5 interceptions. Sesko went on to make 98 touches in the opposition box.
