Singapore – Canadian swimming prodigy Summer McIntosh is making waves at the World Swimming Aquatic Championships in Singapore, having secured two gold medals in as many days. The young sensation is now setting her sights on an extraordinary feat: emulating American legend Michael Phelps by winning five individual gold medals at a single World Championships.
Back-to-Back Gold Medals for McIntosh
McIntosh’s impressive run began on Sunday with a commanding victory in the 400m freestyle. She followed this up with another dominant performance on Monday, clinching the gold medal in the 200-meter individual medley. Her winning time of 2 minutes and 6.69 seconds in the 200m IM showcased her versatility, although it was just shy of her own world record of 2 minutes and 5.70 seconds in the event.
In the 200m individual medley, McIntosh outpaced a strong field. Alex Walsh of the United States earned the silver medal with a time of 2 minutes and 8.58 seconds, while McIntosh’s compatriot Mary-Sophie Harvey secured the bronze, finishing in 2 minutes and 9.15 seconds.
The Pursuit of Phelps’s Record
With two golds already in her possession, McIntosh is now embarking on a demanding schedule over the next six days, as she continues her ambitious quest for additional titles. She is slated to compete in three more individual events: the 400m individual medley (IM), the 800m freestyle, and the 200m butterfly. Her pursuit of five individual gold medals puts her in an exclusive club, with only Michael Phelps having achieved such a remarkable accomplishment in the history of the World Swimming Championships. Her performances thus far underscore her status as one of the sport’s brightest talents.
