Maia, Portugal – Indian long jumper Murali Sreeshankar secured first place at the Meeting Maia Cidade do Desporto 2025, a World Athletics Continental Tour Bronze level meet (Category C), on Saturday, July 19, 2025. This victory marks another significant step in Sreeshankar’s impressive return to competition after a prolonged injury layoff.
Dominant Performance in Portugal
Sreeshankar’s winning leap of 7.75m came in his second attempt of the competition. He opened his series with a jump of 7.63m, before hitting his best mark. He followed up with a 7.69m jump, a foul attempt, a 6.12m jump, and concluded with 7.58m, showcasing consistent form throughout the event. Poland’s Piotr Tarkowski finished second, with Australia’s Chris Mitrevski taking third place.
The Road to Recovery: From Paris Heartbreak to Resurgent Form
The victory in Portugal is particularly significant for Sreeshankar, who was sidelined for an extensive period due to a knee injury. This unfortunate setback forced him to miss the highly anticipated Paris Olympics 2024, a major disappointment for the talented athlete.
After 650 days away from competitive action, Sreeshankar made his much-awaited return at the Indian Open Athletics in Pune on July 12. In a strong comeback performance, he finished first with an impressive attempt of 8.05m, immediately signaling his return to form and elite-level competition.
Eyes on World Championships and Future Goals
With two consecutive wins under his belt since returning from injury, Sreeshankar’s primary aim now shifts to qualifying for the World Championships later this year in Tokyo. Beyond that immediate target, he is focused on maintaining his fitness and form to remain a strong contender for next year’s Commonwealth Games and Asian Games. His back-to-back victories underscore his determination and provide a strong foundation as he eyes these crucial international assignments.
