New Orleans, Louisiana, USA – Dustin Poirier’s storied Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) career concluded on a disappointing note on Sunday, July 20, 2025, as he suffered a unanimous decision loss to Max Holloway in a highly anticipated BMF title fight at UFC 318, held at the Smoothie King Center. The fight marked Poirier’s final walk to the octagon, bringing an end to a brilliant run in mixed martial arts.

Holloway Dominates to Retain BMF Title

Max Holloway (28-8) delivered a masterful performance, securing a unanimous decision victory to successfully retain his UFC BMF Championship. This win marked a significant turning point in the long-standing rivalry between the two fighters, as it was Holloway’s first victory over Poirier in three encounters, with Poirier having bested him in previous matchups in 2012 and 2019.

Holloway’s dominance was evident throughout the bout, particularly in his striking statistics. He landed an impressive 201 strikes compared to Poirier’s 109, a differential of 98 strikes, and maintained a significant strike accuracy of 53%.

The Fight’s Key Moments

Despite fighting against a partisan Louisiana crowd fervently supporting their native son in his retirement match, Holloway proved to be the quicker and more precise fighter from start to finish. He managed to knock Poirier off his feet early in the first round, setting a clear tone. In the second round, another flurry of well-placed combinations sent Poirier to the canvas again, followed by two minutes of dominant grappling from Holloway, further solidifying his control.

Poirier’s best opportunity to shift the momentum came in the final 30 seconds of the second round. He managed to get Holloway to the ground, attempting a chokehold and landing several ground punches before the round concluded, but it wasn’t enough to turn the tide of the fight.

End of a Brilliant Career

The loss brings an end to a truly brilliant career for Dustin “The Diamond” Poirier, who retires with an impressive professional record of 30 wins and 10 losses. A former UFC Lightweight Interim Champion in 2019, Poirier’s legacy is highlighted by significant victories over some of the biggest names in the sport, including two memorable wins over Conor McGregor, as well as triumphs against elite competitors like Justin Gaethje and Michael Chandler. His gritty performances and fan-friendly fighting style cemented his place as one of the UFC’s most beloved and respected athletes.

Co-Main Event: Costa Returns to Winning Ways

In the co-main event of UFC 318, Brazilian middleweight Paulo Costa secured a much-needed unanimous decision win over Roman Kopylov. This victory gets Costa back on track after suffering consecutive losses against former champions Robert Whittaker and Sean Strickland, providing a crucial boost to his standing in the middleweight division.

While the final outcome wasn’t the fairytale ending many hoped for, Dustin Poirier’s retirement from the UFC marks the close of a remarkable chapter for a true warrior of the octagon.
