Marathon Legend Fauja Singh, 114, Killed in Hit-and-Run in Punjab

Jalandhar: Fauja Singh, the world’s oldest marathon runner and a global icon of endurance and resilience, tragically died in a road accident in Punjab’s Jalandhar district on Sunday afternoon. He was 114.

The incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. near Beas Pind village, where Singh was reportedly taking his routine afternoon walk. An unidentified vehicle, believed to be an SUV, struck him and fled the scene. He was rushed to a local hospital but succumbed to his injuries shortly after.

A Journey Born from Grief, Forged in Spirit

Born on April 1, 1911, in British India, Fauja Singh only began running competitively at the remarkable age of 89, following the deaths of his wife and son. What began as a personal outlet for grief transformed into a legendary athletic career.

Over the next two decades, Singh completed numerous international marathons, including events in London, New York, and Toronto. He retired from competitive running in 2013 at the age of 101 but continued to inspire as a public figure and advocate for health and well-being.

Global Mourning and Tributes

News of Singh’s death triggered an outpouring of tributes from around the world. Punjab Governor Banwarilal Purohit expressed deep sorrow, calling Singh “a symbol of strength, hope, and unshakable determination.”

Writer Khushwant Singh, author of The Turbaned Tornado, a biography on Singh’s life, posted an emotional tribute online: “My Turbaned Tornado is no more. He outran time itself. A life that inspired generations has come to rest.”

More Than an Athlete: A Cultural Icon

Standing at 5’8″ and weighing barely 52 kilograms, Fauja Singh became a celebrated face of Adidas’ global “Impossible is Nothing” campaign. He carried the Olympic torch for the 2012 London Games and advocated for various social causes including vegetarianism, child healthcare, and anti-drug campaigns in Punjab.

Despite never officially being listed in Guinness World Records due to lack of a birth certificate, Singh was widely recognized as the oldest person to complete a full marathon.

Investigation Underway

Authorities in Jalandhar have registered a case and initiated a search for the vehicle and its driver. Police are reviewing CCTV footage from nearby areas and have appealed to the public for any leads.

A Legacy That Will Endure

Fauja Singh was more than just a runner. He was a symbol of perseverance, proof that passion and purpose can overcome age and adversity. Even after retiring, he continued to appear at marathons, encouraging runners with his infectious smile and quiet humility.

His life will be remembered not only in the record books, but in the hearts of those he inspired around the globe.
