New Delhi : India’s rising hockey star Deepika has received international recognition for her extraordinary skill, as her spectacular solo goal against the Netherlands has been shortlisted for the prestigious Poligras Magic Skill Award, presented by the International Hockey Federation (FIH).
The nomination highlights a defining moment during this year’s FIH Hockey Pro League. In a high-pressure match held in Bhubaneswar, India faced world number one Netherlands and trailed by two goals. Midway through the third quarter, Deepika produced a moment of brilliance. Charging down the left flank, she beat multiple defenders with deft stickwork, lifted the ball past a diving challenge, and unleashed a precise finish that cut the deficit to 1–2. The goal not only electrified the crowd but also inspired India to equalise and eventually win the match in a tense shootout.
Deepika, who hails from Hisar in Haryana, has quickly emerged as one of India’s most exciting young talents. A powerful forward with an eye for goal, she has already scored over two dozen times in international competition since making her senior debut in 2022. Reflecting on her nomination, she described the goal as one of the most special moments of her career, saying it symbolised her determination to help the team compete with the best in the world.
The Poligras Magic Skill Award is designed to celebrate the season’s most creative and technically brilliant moments. Deepika’s strike is shortlisted alongside two other nominees in the women’s category: Spanish forward Patricia Álvarez’s dazzling dribble and finish against Australia, and Australia’s flowing team goal versus England.
Voting for the award is open to fans worldwide and closes in mid-July.
