Jamaican sprinting legend Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce is set to compete in her final national championships this week, marking the beginning of the end for one of athletics’ most illustrious careers.1 The three-time Olympic and ten-time world gold medalist had previously indicated that 2025 would likely be her last year on the track, driven by a sense of “unfinished business.”
The 38-year-old confirmed at a Nike event on Monday that the Jamaican national championships, starting Thursday, will indeed be her last.2 Fraser-Pryce, who famously won back-to-back Olympic 100-meter titles in 2008 and 2012, expressed her anticipation, stating, “It’s one of those moments that I am looking forward to. You know why? Because I have absolutely nothing to lose and all to gain.” This comes after a challenging experience at her final Olympic Games in Paris, where she was forced to miss the 100m semi-final due to an injury sustained during warm-up. The national championships will also serve as a qualifying event for the World Championships in Tokyo, scheduled from September 13-21.3
