South African champions Mamelodi Sundowns kicked off their FIFA Club World Cup journey with a solid 1-0 victory over South Korea’s Ulsan HD on Tuesday. The match, held in Orlando, Florida, was briefly delayed due to a weather warning but eventually got underway in front of a modest crowd of 3,412.
Weather Delays and Low Attendance
The match was delayed by just over an hour due to severe weather conditions. While it wasn’t one of the marquee clashes in the newly expanded Club World Cup, those who braved the weather witnessed a competitive and spirited contest. Earlier in the day, Borussia Dortmund and Fluminense had played out a goalless draw, leaving Sundowns at the top of Group F after their win.
Rayners Delivers the Decisive Moment
The breakthrough came in the first half, thanks to a well-taken goal by Iqraam Rayners, which ultimately sealed the win for the Sundowns. The side showed early attacking intent and demonstrated flashes of creativity that earned them their nickname, “The Brazilians”, inspired by their yellow kits resembling Brazil’s national team colors.
Zwane Returns to Starting XI
Head coach Miguel Cardoso, who recently led Sundowns to a runner-up finish in the CAF Champions League final, gave Themba Zwane his first start since September, following a spell out due to injury. His return added experience and control to the midfield, contributing to the team’s composed performance.
With this victory, Mamelodi Sundowns take an early lead in Group F, and will look to build momentum in their upcoming matches in the tournament.
