France’s Gicquel and Delrue Stun the Field to Win Historic Indonesia Open Mixed Doubles Title

After surviving six match points in the opening round, the French duo caps a dream run by defeating Thailand’s top seeds to claim their first Super 1000 title.

In a week marked by drama, resilience, and breakthrough performances, France’s Thom Gicquel and Delphine Delrue emerged as the surprise champions of the 2025 Indonesia Open, clinching their maiden Super 1000 title in Jakarta. The French mixed doubles pair defeated Thailand’s top seeds Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Supissara Paewsampran in straight games, 21–16, 21–18, sending shockwaves through the badminton world and marking a watershed moment for French badminton.

Their journey was nothing short of miraculous. In the opening round, they faced near-certain elimination, trailing 15–20 in the third game against Indonesian pair Rehan Naufal Kusharjanto and Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja. With the crowd behind the home pair and the pressure mounting, Gicquel and Delrue saved six match points in a stunning comeback that ignited their tournament.

“This week has been unbelievable,” said Delrue after the final. “We were almost out in the first match, but something clicked. We kept fighting and now we’re standing here as champions.”

The French pair grew in confidence with each round, dispatching strong opponents with a blend of relentless defense and precise net play. Their chemistry and movement on court were a class apart, culminating in a clinical performance in the final where they never allowed the Thai duo to dictate the tempo.

An Se-young’s Grit Shines in Women’s Singles

While the French win stole the headlines, South Korea’s An Se-young provided one of the tournament’s most memorable moments in the women’s singles final. Trailing China’s Wang Zhi Yi by a game and 9–17 in the second, An dug deep to pull off an extraordinary comeback, winning 13–21, 21–19, 21–15.

“I just told myself to stay in the match,” An said. “Even when things looked impossible, I believed I could turn it around.”

The victory marked An’s third Super 1000 title of the season and reinforced her status as the most consistent women’s singles player of the year.

Other Final Results Round-Up

Men’s Singles: Denmark’s Anders Antonsen outplayed Chou Tien-chen 22–20, 21–14 to win his first Indonesia Open title after multiple runner-up finishes.

Men’s Doubles: South Korea’s Kim Won-ho and Seo Seung-jae defeated Indonesia’s Sabar Karyaman Gutama and Moh Reza Isfahani 18–21, 21–19, 21–12 in a high-intensity battle.

Women’s Doubles: China’s Liu Shengshu and Tan Ning edged past Malaysia’s Pearly Tan and Thinaah Muralitharan 23–25, 21–12, 21–19 in a pulsating three-game thriller.

A New Chapter for France

For Gicquel and Delrue, the title represents not just personal achievement but a milestone for French badminton, which has long been in the shadows of Asia’s dominant forces. With this win, they become the first French pair to claim a Super 1000 title — a level of tournament just below the World Championships and the Olympics.

“This is more than a trophy,” Gicquel said. “It’s a signal that France can compete at the highest level. We hope this inspires the next generation.”

With Paris 2028 on the horizon, the timing could not be better.
